Youth Sailing World Championships 2021 - the 420' - Sultanat Oman (OMA)
Florian Krauss (YCSS) & Jannis Suemmchen (CYC) - World Champions at the Youth Sailing WORLD Championships 2021 in the 420! The joy was huge, the well-deserved jump into the Arabian Sea off the Sultanate of Oman was a real cool down for the young World Champions 2021! On their return to Munich, their "hand luggage" included an impressive trophy, donated back in 1971 and now presented to a German team for the first time in 50 years. The engravings mention the names of famous sailors, such as the 2012 Olympic champion Tom Slingsby from Sydney (AUS) in Laser and Nathan Outteridge from Lake Macquarie (AUS) in 49er.
Florian: "I really like playing Tactical Sailing to keep fit!"
The Tactical Sailing team congratulates the successful sailors on their world championship title in the 420! It was an extremely successful year for both of them - as they already won the German championship title in their sailing class in autumn 2021! Jannis trains at the Chiemsee Yacht Club (CYC) while Florian has been at home at the Yacht-Club Seeshaupt (YCSS) on Lake Starnberg (near Munich) for many years. The latter is now helmsman in the 420 and, with Jannis as crew, a perfect and - as the results show - extremely successful duo. The Tactical Sailing Team was able to get to know the CYC and its children's and youth work last October on the occasion of the International Optimist Youth Championships. Both clubs stand out for their dedicated youth work and have made a name for themselves with many successes of "their" young sailors, such as with sailors like Nils Sternbeck from YCSS, runner-up in the 2013 Opti World Championships, and Tina Lutz from CYC with a silver medal at the 2021 Olympics in the 49FX.
Congratulations guys! 420 Men/Mixed Podium at the #youthworlds2021oman ⛵️??

The German team formed by Florian Krauss / Jannis Suemmchen GER (2-11-2-6-15-3-10-2-2) was crowned new 2021 Youth Sailing World champion in the 420 Men/Mixed fleet after finishing second on the last race of the championship. They were third before this trial but a misstep by both teams in front allowed them to raise the top spot for the first time in the event and get the Gold medal. This way the overnight leaders Ian Clive / Finn Dicke ESP (4-3-5-1-11-7-7-4-13) and Roi Levy / Ariel Gal ISR ( 14 -1-1-7-1-12-9-3-16) were relegated to the second and third place, winning the Silver and Bronze medals respectively.
"It’s unbelievable," said Krauss. "We worked so long for this. This was our last 420 regatta, now we look at what comes next, maybe 470, maybe 49er. This year has been incredible for us. We won the German Championship too. See more information here.
Order a Coach's Toolbox here in the online shop. Participants in the 2021 championship in Argentina - as now also for the 2023 championships in Spain and Greece - will be offered a Coach’s Toolbox. The idea for the Spanish language version came from Pablo Villar (ARG), who has been working intensively for years in Buenos Aires to promote young sailors. Pablo Villar:

Strategic and tactical decisions in regatta sailing are made in a similar way to classic "risk management". Already at the starting line, the sailor has to decide on the right or left side of the Regatta area. Jochen Schumann, Germany's most successful sailor, agrees: "The physics of sailing constantly forces us to make a clear decision. " In the Tactical Sailing program there is the "Coach’s Toolbox" with over 100 exercises. From this toolbox collection we have put together a special "Tool Bag" for regatta sailors. With these exercises, the ability to make decisions is trained, such as risk assessment and gain-loss analysis. They serve the regatta sailor to prepare for cups and championships, such as:
With one "click", the coach can repeatedly call up the simulation of a regatta scene as video clips (YouTube) and discuss it with the sailors, e.g. tactical behaviour on the way to the finish line. We are happy to provide the new "Tool Bag" for all sailors.
A fleet of 433 sailors from more than 60 nations competed in 11 events with blue skies and winds of 8 – 10 knots rounded off five days of world-class competition. Away from the competition, Oman Sail has set a Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Nationalities Collecting Litter. Participants at the Youth Sailing World Championships, including sailors, Oman Sail officials, staff at Barceló Mussanah Resort and members from the OMRAN Group broke a new record with 73 nationalities collecting over 344 kg of litter at Mussanah public beach on 15 December.
