Florian (born in 2003) learnt to sail in the Opti on Lake Starnberg at the YCSS and was German runner-up in the Opti in 2016. Florian has been a tactically astute helmsman right from the start: "I really enjoy playing 'Tactical Sailing' to keep fit! Especially with the slalom function, you learn to react quickly and well to wind shifts." Jannis (born in 2003) - also an experienced Opti sailor from Chiemsee (CYC) - became friends with Florian. He sailed together in the 420 as a foresailor. "We won the gold medal in Oman and won the 420 Youth Sailig World Championships 2021." They sailed their first regatta in the "small 49er FX" at Kieler Woche 2023 before competing in the 49er Junior World Championship 2023 and finishing in a respectable 32nd place. A positive start in the "big" 49er, which as an "Olympic class" awakens a special ambition in Florian and Jannis for the next regattas - with the goal of the Olympics. See individual reports below.
Report: From 25 to 29 July, the 49er Junior World Championship - "Junior World Championship 2023" took place on the Baltic Sea as part of the Travemünde Week. For Florian Krauss and Jannis Suemmchen, this was their first regatta with the big 49er rig - and at a world championship. "We were able to adapt well to the new environment in the qualifying series and were on course for the gold fleet until the penultimate qualifying day. Unfortunately, the last qualifying day didn't go perfectly for us, which meant that we only just missed out on the Gold Fleet in the end. We were then able to finish the Silver Fleet in 2nd place, which earned us 32nd place in the overall standings. We had hoped for more at the Junior World Championship 2023, but all in all it was a positive start for us in the "big" 49er". The 2023 Junior World Champions were the Australians AUS 66 Jack FERGUSON and Jack HILDEBRAND.
Florian & Jannis: A week full of light winds, close racing and a lot of learnings. After a bumpy start to the regatta, we were able to get along better and better with the challenging condotions and finished our series with a second place in silver fleet ??. All in all we are happy with our first senior event - 1st U21 ?. See: https://sailingteam-krauss-suemmchen.com/en/#team
49er: First major victory for Rual and Amoros. Lucas Rual and Emile Amoros of France (FRA 95) won the 49er European Championships by less than a point from Dominik Buksak and Szymon Wierzbicki from Poland. If the Medal Race had gone ahead they would have gone in effectively tied and ready to compete in a who-beats-who scenario. Actually the points were so tight in the men’s 49er that any of the top six would have had a realistic shot at the gold medal.
Report : From 17 June to 21 June, the first regatta in the 49er FX was scheduled for us as part of Kiel Week 2023. A total of 44 boats started. The first two days we waited in vain for wind. On the third day, we sailed 2 races in light wind conditions and finished 15th and 2nd. On the fourth day we also sailed 4 races in light wind conditions and were able to secure our place in the medal race, which was a huge success for us. The medal race the next day took place in 15 knt in the Bay of Kiel. To our disappointment, we only took 10th place here, although the joy of the overall performance prevailed and we were very happy about the 10th place in the overall result at the Kieler Woche 2023.
