Medalists: AUT Lara Vadlau / Lukas Mähr; JPN Keiju Okada / Miho Yoshioka; SWE Anton Dahlberg / Lovisa Karlsson
GER Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort reached 14th place.

Olympic regatta series for the 470 started well for GER Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort

The Olympic regatta series in Marseille got off to a fantastic start for Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort on August 2, 2024: With 8th and 4th place, they finished day 1 in 3rd place. 🎉. Simon and Anna had difficult phases in both races and even took penalty circles!

Unfortunately, the 470 races are not shown on German TV!
The results list is here.  See news here.

Races 1 + 2

World Sailing news: "The latest class to launch was the 470 and Japan’s Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka made the most of their first outing, coming first and second to lead the fleet overall. Reigning world champions Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman of Spain kept close to the leaders with fifth and sixth place finishes today. Meanwhile, Germany’s Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort combined well on the water to edge into third, just a point off the Spanish crew."

Races 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 - tactical errors by the Japanese Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka (JPN)

After 6 races: After 6 races: Lara Vadlau and Lukas Maehr (AUT) continued their climb up the rankings with another consistent series of races in the Mixed Dinghy. The Austrian team started the day in second place but moved to the top of the fleet after an impressive win in race six in treacherous light winds.
Spain's Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman (ESP) also mastered the mild conditions with a sixth and third place, moving back up to second overall.
Japan's Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka (JPN) experienced their weakest day on the water yet after some tactical errors saw them finish only 14th and 12th. They dropped to third in the rankings but are still just one point behind the Spanish 470 team.
Okada (JPN) said: “Today was a difficult day. We made a mistake when we chose the left side. The first and second days were really good for us, but today was really bad for us. Hopefully we can do better, we are confident."
Vadlau (AUT) said: “It was quite challenging with a super treacherous wind. We tried to stay as cool as possible and just made the best of it and luckily it worked out well. We are happy that we had a good day.”
Maehr (AUT) said: “We take it day by day because we know the Bay of Marseille well. We have trained a lot here and I think it is so different from day to day. It is so wonderful to sail here but it is also very difficult to get the good side right.”
Brugman (ESP) said: “Consistency was our main strategy for this event, at least in the first few days, so we stuck to the plan and are very happy with that. “Today it was really easy to make big mistakes and we are really happy that we were able to stay consistent on such a tricky day. We focused on starts, speed and avoiding big risks. We will reassess that in the next few days but we are really happy with how we are sailing.”
Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort (GER) reached 9th place.
Simon Diesch (GER) explains after day 3 of the regatta: "The wind today was at 4-7 knots, which is more on the lower end of what you can sail."

Races 7 + 8 - no medal race for Simon and Anna - overall 14

It is a very disappointing day for Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort (GER), they eached 14th place overall.
Races 7 + 8: A 19th place and a forced abandonment of the 2nd race after two penalties on the course have destroyed their chance of participating in the medal race. "We get flags for pumping, even if we can't understand how we could have pumped," said Simon Diesch.
It is really bitter. Unfortunately, there is no other way to put it.

Simon's and Anna's challenges: Tactics and strategy play a big role in the 470

Anna Markfort explains that both Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort decided early on to use the 470, which has been an Olympic sport since 1976, as their boat of choice: "The 470 is still one of the old and therefore classic boat classes. Due to the many trimming options and the relatively slow boat speed,
- tactics and strategy play a much bigger role in the 470 than in the faster boat classes.
We like that and find that exciting." Simon Diesch adds: "The 470 offers the widest range of sailing sports and is
- incredibly strategically demanding.
The 470, like the Ilca, demands and enables you to react adequately to all challenges. Here, centimeters make the difference between good and outstanding."
